Goodman Campbell physicians serve as the faculty of Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Neurological Surgery Program. Goodman Campbell has over 200 years of resident training experience.
Shaping the Future of Healthcare
Medical education can and should take many forms. Goodman Campbell’s dedication to learning and teaching is far reaching, from students considering medical school to neurosurgical residents to allied health providers seeing patients everyday. Support from the Neurosurgery Foundation at Goodman Campbell empowers our physicians and practice to prioritize education and continue to develop more ways to make a positive impact on the future of neurological care and the field of neurosurgery.
Mentoring future physicians
“Working with our research students is personal. I remember being in their position and benefiting from mentors who invested their time and created real opportunities — those experiences were foundational to where I am today.”
Vincent J. Alentado, MD
Neurosurgeon, Spine Specialist
Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis Neurological Surgery Residency Program
The physicians of Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine serve as the faculty of Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Neurological Surgery Program. Founded on Dr. Julius Goodman’s belief that neurosurgical specialization delivers the highest quality care, our practice has built a residency program grounded in that same philosophy. With more than 200 years of combined resident training experience, our nationally recognized specialists are dedicated to advancing neurological care through and training the next generation of neurosurgical leaders.
Summer Internship Program
Launched in 2023 by the Neurosurgery Foundation at Goodman Campbell, the Goodman Campbell Summer Internship Program provides outstanding students who have completed their first year of medical school with hands-on experience in neurosurgical research, clinical data analysis, and quality improvement initiatives. Interns contribute to projects involving patient outcomes, radiographic measurements, and brain and spine surgery research while gaining exposure to neurosurgical practice through physician-led educational sessions, mentorship, and shadowing opportunities. The program is designed to develop future healthcare professionals while advancing research that improves patient care and surgical outcomes.
Research plays a major part in the internship program. Goodman Campbell provides the tools, structure, and support summer interns need to grow as clinical researchers, while encouraging them to take ownership of their work. Critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills develop quickly in a short period of time. Interns and gap-year students have the chance to secure authorship on publications, which makes them a better clinician and more competitive in medical school.
Gap Year Student Program
The Goodman Campbell Gap Year Student Program is an initiative of the Neurosurgery Foundation at Goodman Campbell that provides aspiring physicians with an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in neurosurgery, clinical research, and patient care before entering medical school. Participants work closely with physicians and healthcare professionals, contribute to meaningful research initiatives, present findings at professional conferences, and gain valuable exposure to the day-to-day practice of medicine. Designed to foster professional growth and mentorship, the program helps students build a strong foundation for their future careers in healthcare while making meaningful contributions to the organization.
University Collaborations in Indiana
In 2020, Goodman Campbell physicians began sharing their knowledge and experience as guest lecturers and assistant clinical professors through Marian University’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program. As adjunct faculty, our physicians help prepare students for their residency and future careers. The Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine is an accredited institution conveniently located in Indianapolis. Goodman Campbell also participates in the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s research day.
In 2023, Goodman Campbell kicked off a partnership with Purdue University with a presentation as part of the school’s Seminar for Neurotrauma and Diseases. In 2024, three Goodman Campbell physicians were appointed as adjunct assistant professors at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. The three-year faculty appointments include research collaboration and teaching opportunities that strengthen the connection between engineering and medicine while advancing innovation in patient care. The Goodman Campbell Neurotrauma and Diseases Seminar at Purdue launched in 2025.
As part of these university partnerships, Goodman Campbell hosts doctoral students from Marian University and undergraduate biomedical engineering students from Purdue University for clinical rotations. These one-month stints provide firsthand exposure to interventional brain and spine procedures, the application of emerging medical technologies, and the ways in which Goodman Campbell cares for patients in an environment of healing, teaching, and discovery.
Indy NeuroCon
Indy NeuroCon is an educational conference for advanced practice providers hosted by Goodman Campbell. Through expert presentations and interactive discussions, attendees gain practical knowledge about neurological conditions, surgical and nonsurgical treatment options, and the latest advances in patient care. The conference also fosters collaboration among providers, helping participants better identify neurological conditions, educate patients, and determine when advanced neurological referral is appropriate.
